Faculty - Clinical Cancer Research
Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech (VT) seeks to recruit an innovative clinician-scientist leader to its Patient Research Center (PRC) at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC (FBRI - https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/) for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position at the associate or full professor level. The PRC initiative has received substantial funding support as part of the state’s Biomedical Research Diamond (https://cardinalnews.org/2026/02/20/friedlander-a-smart-investment-for-southwest-virginia/) to launch this major exciting new program, including provision of clinical research support teams and facilities.
The clinician-scientist will have an earned M.D. degree with active medical license and preferably also have a Ph.D. as well as appropriate postdoctoral residency-fellowship training. They should have an active research program that is funded through federal agencies and/or industry for human patient based clinical research, while they may also have a more translational laboratory-based research program as well. They will join a dynamic and growing community of scholars including scientists, physicians and physician-scientists focused on next generation approaches to cancer research directed at having dramatic impacts on precision prevention, diagnoses, and treatment of cancers such as blood, brain, G.I., lung, breast and bone.
Applications from investigators using innovative contemporary approaches to study cancer in patients such as prevention and predictive analytics, diagnostics and/or therapeutics including clinical research trials are welcomed. The faculty member will join 45 other faculty led teams at the FBRI of which 12 are cancer researchers including several physician-scientists (https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/research/research-centers/cancer-research-center-roanoke.htmlhttps://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/research/research-centers/cancer-research-center-DC.html). The primary responsibility for the position is to lead a strong extramurally funded leading-edge clinical research program in cancer research with some time devoted to patient care responsibilities with our clinical partner, Carilion Clinic (https://www.carilionclinic.org/heart) and will include some research mentoring of graduate and medical students as well as fellows.
The position will be located at the FBRI on Virginia Tech’s health sciences and technology campus in Roanoke, Virginia, immediately adjacent to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, Carilion Clinic, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the new Carilion Taubman Cancer Center (https://mcdmag.com/2026/09/carilion-taubman-cancer-center-reaches-construction-milestone/) and Virginia Tech’s Animal Cancer Care and Research Center (https://cancercare.vetmed.vt.edu/). In addition to the position at the research institute, the faculty member will also have a tenured or tenure-track appointment in an appropriate VT department from among multiple colleges, including the School of Medicine.
Research infrastructure at the FBRI currently includes over 300,000 square feet of lab, core facilities and office space (http://fralinbiomed.info/buildingtour). Facilities at the research institute include multiple human subject research-dedicated 3.0T MRIs, high field MR guided PET for animal research, MR-guided focused ultrasound for cancer treatment, multiple cellular/molecular imaging facilities including transcriptomics and genomics analysis as well as a next generation molecular oncology diagnostics laboratory.
Please submit your application to posting #538363 including full curriculum and statement of research accomplishments and plans. Review of applications will begin January 11, 2027, but position will remain open until filled.
